[Soaring to Excellence] Our Students Achieve Outstanding Results in the 2nd OnSite Autonomous Driving Algorithm Challenge

2025-05-26 13:20

On November 20, 2024, the 2nd OnSite Autonomous Driving Algorithm Challenge, guided by the Department of Engineering and Materials Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE-China), and co-organized by Chang'an University, Tongji University, and the National Innovation Center for Intelligent and Connected Vehicles (ICV), concluded successfully. The competition featured four simulation tracks and one real-vehicle track, attracting over 50 teams from institutions such as Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to the simulation rounds, with the top 20 teams advancing to the real-vehicle challenge. The event aimed to advance high-level autonomous driving algorithm research, strengthen industry-academia collaboration, and accelerate the commercialization of autonomous vehicle technologies.

The "WUT_FSD" team from our school, led by advisor Professor Pei Xiaofei and composed of five master's students—Hu Zhilong, Wei Weiran, Lei Wukun, Zhou Honglong, and Wu Jiaqi—achieved remarkable results across three tracks:

  • 2nd Place in the "Perception-Planning-Control Integrated Challenge"

  • 5th Place in the "Urban & Highway Roads" track

  • 4th Place (Third Prize) in the "Virtual-Real Fusion Autonomous Driving Real-Vehicle Challenge"

The competition, which began in mid-March, spanned over six months and involved 77 universities, 309 teams, and 1,268 participants, conducting more than 2.2 million scenario tests. Tasks included car-following, lane-changing, intersection navigation, and autonomous parking. The "WUT_FSD" team demonstrated exceptional collaboration and perseverance, successfully implementing reinforcement learning algorithms in real-vehicle applications. Their performance exemplified the scientific rigor, innovation, and pursuit of excellence that define our students. Notably, the team secured 6th Place in the "Integrated Challenge" at the inaugural 2023 OnSite competition.
