Introduction: Plating of chrome on plastic has become more and more important in the automobile industry for many parts in the interior and exterior. Based on customers’ requirements for look-and-feel the design departments try to implement more and more parts in chrome look. They design parts with complex geometries which can be realized much easier with chrome plated plastic than it was possible with the traditional substrates (e.g. steel, brass), but is still limited at some point.
The widely spread use of chrome plated plastic parts is based on their low weight, the fact that different geometries are relatively easy to realize, low price and less need for rework. However the whole process of plating plastic parts is a multistage process especially as the insulator plastic has to be made conductive. The production of chrome plated plastic parts touches scientific fields like physics and chemistry.
